Trip Interruption & Cancellation Insurance

University travelers may consider purchasing trip cancellation and/or trip interruption insurance for university or personal travel. This insurance can reduce the financial risk associated with travel.

Trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance typically provides reimbursement for last-minute cancellations due to sickness, severe weather, or even security risks. During travel it can provide coverage for travel delays, missed connections, lost/stolen baggage, early departures due to unforeseen personal events, extended in-country stays due to COVID-19, and more. It also includes optional add-on benefits (at higher cost) of Cancel For Any Reason and Interruption For Any Reason (CFAR/IFAR) where travelers have the option to cancel or interrupt their trip for any reason whatsoever and it would be covered by the insurance.

The university does not provide this kind of insurance, but it can be purchased independently. Several options for trip cancellation and/or trip interruption are available online. If interested, travelers can purchase coverage from any provider.

Before purchasing, travelers should compare insurance benefits and cost. Travelers should understand the covered reasons for cancellation and/or interruption in the basic plan; adding CFAR/IFAR will cover any reason at 75% reimbursement. Cost is usually based on total program costs to be insured, traveler’s age, and trip duration. If you consider purchasing trip interruption and cancellation insurance, with or without the CFAR/IFAR option, make sure you know the following for your travel or program:

  • What is and is not covered – specifically in relation to COVID-19 and pandemics since not all trip interruption and cancellation insurance cover COVID-19 or pandemic diseases.
  • Your airline’s flight cancellation refund policy.
  • Your program’s cancellation and refund policies.
  • The terms of your housing contract, the cost of housing, and when deposits and expenses are owed for your housing.

International Safety and Security has identified an option for supplemental travel insurance. Gallagher’s Worldwide Trip Protector plan through Travel Insured International provides trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance and can work with university travelers or those on independent or personal travel.

For more information on Gallagher’s Worldwide Trip Protector plan, please review:

For Gallagher’s Worldwide Trip Protector plan, travelers must enroll within 21 days of receiving a non-refundable bill for a coverable expense to be eligible for the Cancel For Any Reason and Interruption For Any Reason (CFAR/IFAR) benefits. Make sure you know important payment due dates for your program, including any potential program deposits, program fee payments, housing deposits, and airfare payments.
